call it good since I cant find ITC-100 here but I was wondering after some research and not being able to make up my mind about it thought to ask you guys. Ive seen many people here say they use Satinite, but for whatever reason, Im having trouble finding purchasing information for it online. HarbisonWalker International is the leader in refractories, providing high heat refractory products and monolithics. Also good to use as a slurry to seal the inswool on the walls of your forge. I am seeing a great deal of links pointing to Rutland refractory cement, though. Firebrick vs. Refractory Cement...? I saw it online for about $12, but I need to find it where the shipping won't be so high (like, So Cal, so I can drive to it). Satanite refractory mortar is also used as a clay coating for developing "temper lines" (Hamons) on your blades. For the lid, I used just wool and Satanite with a thin metal shell. This high temperature refractory mortar/cement is the stuff that the late Bob Engnath promotes on his website for clay coating blades as well as the material that Walley Hayes uses in his Katana making videos. This castable refractory cement can be used for gunning, casting, troweling, or extruding. Refractory material for lining the floor of your forge. Satanite has 3200°F temperature rating. While refractory cement is similar to standard cement in how it is mixed, it differs significantly from standard cement in the use of one ingredient. If you are going to apply ITC-100 over top of the Satanite, be sure to fully cure the Satanite first. My process is to use a 2" kaowool blanket. Is firebrick really necessary, or could the whole inner dome be constructed from The Satanite is a refractory cement that insulates the surface of the wool, this keeping more of the heat in the chamber ( it does not reflect or absorb, just insulate). The ITC-100 is a highly heat reflective coating that greatly reduces the heat loss. 50 pound bag yields approximately 0.38 cubic feet This refractory mortar is designed to successfully withstand high sulphur fuel, reducing atmospheres, carbon deposition, erosion and abrasion. Satanite Refractory Cement 1 Articles . Refractory cement is used for building brick or stone fireplaces, barbecues or other installations which are subjected to intense heat. You can even use hamon clay to coat your entire blade to aid in the reduction of scaling during the heat treating process of blade-making. At Bonz recommendation, I did use it as a hot face on my very low mass furnace and found it does work well on the side walls covering 2” of high temp (2600f) wool. The floor needed a thin coat (1/2”) of dense refractory due to drips of iron eroding the Satanite/wool. Reefera4m recommended I try Hercules Furnace cement as an alternative (also 3000 degrees F). APG #36 Refractory Cement. 5 lb. As the topic title states, is one refractory cement better than another? So, here's a question for all you experts out there: I just came back from my oven building class and started thinking about the following: when building the oven, one would definitely want to use firebrick for the hearth surface, but what about the inner dome? August 27, 2012 by Mike Szczys 14 Comments . Build Your Own Forge Inside A Gallon Paint Can. As it is, I can get 30 lbs of Satanite for the same price, only adding a little to the shipping. Yield: 131 Pounds dry yields 1 cubic foot.
